The Silo Home was developed as an entry into the 2009 Photo voltaic Decathlon, an international competitors on energy-efficient solar-powered house, designed by numerous faculty and college groups.

Cornell University explains: “The 2009 Cornell College Solar Decathlon Home engages sustainable, modular style having a distinctive assembly of circular and orthogonal components, formally comparable towards the vernacular architecture found in upstate New York. The home is composed of a central square courtyard surrounded by 3 conditioned “living” cylinders having a rectilinear array of photovoltaics floating above the whole structure. The open courtyard serves because the focal point of the home, outlined by perimeter columns along with a photovoltaic canopy as an independent dice. The adjoining cylinders – bed room, kitchen, and living room – direct views to the central courtyard. Although you will find few windows along the circumference of each cylinder, big operable Nanawalls open the space between the cylinders and also the courtyard totally. This exchange is encouraged with flexible furniture that could be moved between the interior and exterior and an out of doors fireplace constructed ın to the courtyard.
